Architecture Majors
If you’re interested in the undergraduate architecture major, submit a specific drawing in addition to the other required application materials. This drawing will be used to evaluate your drawing skills and will be one of many factors considered in the review of your eligibility for admission into the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. It won’t be used, however, in the review of your eligibility for admission to the University of Maryland. Exception: If you’re a transfer applicant who is not currently enrolled at the university, you don’t have to submit the drawing.
Please follow these directions precisely when composing your drawing:
• The subject must be a still life on a table top and should include all of the following elements:
-A bottle or vase
-An open book
-Two or three pieces of fruit
-A hat or gloves
• The drawing must be made by observation.
• You are responsible for determining the view, composition, degree of detail, shade and shadow, line quality, etc.
• You must use graphite pencil (2B-9B range) on 8 ½” by 11” white artist’s drawing paper of medium to heavy weight.
Submit your drawing in digital format when completing the online application. Once you have indicated architecture as your intended major, you will be prompted to upload your file.
The file must be:
• a .jpg, .jpeg, .png or .pdf
• no larger than 1000 KB in size
• scanned at 300 dpi or better
If it is not possible to submit the drawing electronically, mail the original drawing and required cover sheet to:
