Transfer Merit Scholarships

If you are transferring to the University of Maryland, we offer scholarships tailored just for you!

Merit scholarships provide financial awards to some of the University of Maryland’s most academically talented transfer students. Transfer applicants are automatically considered for some of these merit scholarships, while others require a separate application. Only U.S. citizens and permanent residents can qualify for the university’s merit scholarships.

Admission decision letters for priority applicants are mailed by mid-April, and merit scholarship award notifications are mailed beginning a few weeks later. Students cannot appeal their merit scholarship decisions, and the university does not match award offers from other institutions. Awards offered to admitted students who do not enroll at Maryland cannot be disbursed to other students.

To be considered for merit scholarships, students must submit a completed undergraduate admission application for the fall semester by the March 1 Priority Deadline. Students are only eligible to receive one merit scholarship. All merit scholarship decisions are based on academic and applicant information at the time of applying, not current or ongoing work. Additional eligibility requirements for each scholarship vary and can be found below.

The Transfer Academic Excellence Scholarship (TAES) is awarded each fall semester and assists transfer students by covering full tuition for four consecutive semesters. The TAES application is due no later than March 1. Selected recipients will be invited to campus for an interview in late March or early April as part of the final selection process. TAES recipients will be notified via mail by the end of April if they receive an award.

To be eligible for TAES, candidates must:

  • Be a new transfer applicant to the University of Maryland for the fall or spring semesters with no previous attendance at the university.
  • Be a Maryland resident at the time of applying.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher for all college work, including work from institutions other than Maryland community colleges.
  • Earned an associate’s degree from a Maryland community college, have completed, or be in the process of completing 60 college credits with the most recent 30 credits earned at a Maryland community college.
    • The degree or credits must be earned prior to the first semester of enrollment at the University of Maryland.
    • Students completing their 60th credit at the time of applying must reflect that courses are in progress on their transcript or on the transfer application.
  • Show English language proficiency, as demonstrated through a review of all materials submitted with the application.

To apply for TAES, candidates must submit the following required materials by March 1:

  • A completed transfer application for admission.
  • A completed TAES application, which is included in the online application for transfer admission.
    • Fall semester applicants must complete the TAES application online by March 1 to be considered for the scholarship.
    • Newly admitted Spring semester transfer students are eligible to apply for TAES by filling out the online application by March 1st.
  • Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.
  • An activities and awards list or resume, detailing your extracurricular and personal activities, including dates, and describing your involvement and participation.
  • A 500 word, typed and double-spaced essay on the following topic:
    • Describe the neighborhood or community you grew up in. How has it shaped your dreams and aspirations, and how do you intend to use your educational and professional goals to impact the University of Maryland and beyond?
    • Those who submitted a 3 page essay instead of, or in addition to, the 500 word essay for TAES will not be penalized during the review and selection process.
  • Two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a community college faculty member, and one from an individual of your choosing. All recommendation letters must be submitted to taes@umd.edu.

If you should have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding the Transfer Academic Excellence Scholarship, please send an email to taes@umd.edu.

The Maryland Transfer Scholarship provides partial-tuition awards ranging from $5,000 distributed equally over two semesters to $10,000 distributed equally over four consecutive semesters.

Only in-state students transferring to the University of Maryland from a two-year or four-year institution are eligible. Students are considered for this award on the basis of academic talent and demonstrated financial need. To maintain the scholarship, students must be enrolled full time beginning this fall academic semester and maintain a cumulative grade point average of a 3.20. Each fall, roughly 200 Maryland Transfer Scholarship recipients are welcomed to campus.

The President’s Transfer Scholarship provides funding for a maximum of two years to out-of-state transfer students enrolled at the University of Maryland. The annual award is in the amount of $5,000 and is determined through a competitive process based on academic talent. Only out-of-state applicants are eligible to receive the President’s Transfer Scholarship. No separate application is required for consideration, as recipients are identified through evaluation of admission application materials including academic achievement, extracurricular activities, awards, honors, and an essay

In addition to these scholarships, several academic departments offer merit scholarships to their most promising students. You should contact the department, college or school directly for information about availability, eligibility, applications and deadlines.
