Maryland Transfer Advantage Program

The Maryland Transfer Advantage Program (MTAP) provides a pathway for students at participating community colleges to earn an undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland (UMD).

Students who participate in MTAP have access to transfer advising resources, can take discounted courses at UMD, and are guaranteed admission to the university upon successful completion of the program and submission of a transfer application by the priority application deadline.

Fall Updates

The MTAP online application for Spring 2019 is now closed.

  • The next available deadline for Course Interest Survey submission is January 10 by 5:00 p.m. for the spring semester.

To be eligible for MTAP, students should have graduated from high school and must be enrolled at one of the program’s eight partner community colleges. This program is geared towards students who intend to complete 30 credits or an associate’s degree at a participating community college, then transfer to the University of Maryland to complete a bachelor’s degree.

Incoming freshmen who have been admitted to UMD for the spring semester are not eligible to apply to MTAP. For more information about ineligible applicants, please review the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program FAQs.

Participating community colleges:

  • Anne Arundel Community College
  • Carroll Community College
  • Chesapeake College
  • College of Southern Maryland
  • Community College of Baltimore County
  • Frederick Community College
  • Montgomery College
  • Prince George’s Community College

Students may apply from the time they are admitted to a participating community college until the MTAP deadline prior to their last semester.

If you are interested in becoming a member of MTAP, you must submit our online application by the appropriate deadline. Once your application is submitted, your community college will be informed and will submit your academic transcript or enrollment verification form. After these items are received, your MTAP application will be complete and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions will review your application.

Students are notified via email of their MTAP admission decision 4-6 weeks after the application deadline, contingent upon the enrollment verification by the community college. These notifications will be sent to the email provided in the application.

*Students applying after the deadline will be considered on a space-available basis.

Upon receiving an MTAP acceptance letter, participating students will have access to transfer advising resources and can take UMD courses at a 25% reduced tuition rate until they officially transfer to the university. With the payment of fees, participants can access all services and benefits available to UMD students including a UMD student ID and access to the library system, athletic events, Shuttle–UM buses, the Eppley Recreation Center, Stamp Student Union and University Health Center, and reduced ticket prices for events at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center.

In order to register for a course, the student has to complete and submit a Course Interest Survey (CIS) for concurrent enrollment by the deadline indicated at the top of the form. Students should review the Schedule of Classes to choose possible courses and submit their completed CIS via email to mtap@umd.edu.

If the CIS is received by the appropriate deadline, students will be registered for their MTAP course at the reduced tuition rate. All courses count toward a student’s overall academic performance once they transfer to Maryland.

Please note: Completing a course at UMD is not a requirement of the program and students are unable to register themselves for MTAP courses. Please review the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program FAQs for information regarding course availability and limitations.

Students must participate in MTAP for a minimum of one semester before transferring to UMD. To complete the program requirements and successfully transfer to Maryland, students should work closely with their community college counselor to meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Complete 30 college credit hours or earn an associate’s degree from an MTAP partner community college
  • Complete Fundamental Studies Academic English and Mathematics*
  • Earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or a B average from all previous institutions attended
  • Adherence to all admission policies in addition to the academic stipulations already listed
  • Submit a completed UMD transfer application by the priority deadline following the semester in which you’ll complete all MTAP requirements

*AP/IB credits can be used to satisfy the Fundamental English & Math courses required for MTAP, however, they will not count towards the overall 30 college credit hours required to complete MTAP or apply for transfer admissions to the University of Maryland. Original AP/IB test scores must be sent directly from the testing agency to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Additionally, credits earned at another two- or four-year institution can be used to meet the MTAP requirements, as long as the last 15 credits are completed at one of the seven participating community colleges.

The Articulation System for Maryland Colleges and University (ARTSYS) and Transfer Credit Services websites provide information on how courses from any Maryland college or university will transfer to UMD. You may also review how AP and/or IB credits may transfer to UMD.
