Maryland Ascent Program (Baltimore)

Maryland Ascent Program (MAP)

The Maryland Ascent Program helps first-generation students from Baltimore City and select Baltimore County schools navigate the complex world of college admission.

Rising high school seniors are eligible to apply for MAP. The deadline to apply is September 15, 2023.

Professional school counselors are encouraged to recommend students if they believe they are eligible to participate and would benefit from this program. Recommended students will also need to submit a MAP application to be considered.

What is the Maryland Ascent Program (MAP)?

MAP is a University of Maryland (UMD) program designed to help first-generation students from Baltimore City and select Baltimore County schools navigate the complex world of college admissions. Through a series of events during the fall semester, selected students will receive guidance from admissions staff and take their first steps toward earning a college degree. MAP provides participants, known as Ascent Fellows, with educational, motivational and practical tools modeled after those used by private college counselors.

What does it mean to be an Ascent Fellow?

Ascent Fellows have access to workshops and resources provided by UMD's Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Office of Student Financial Aid. Participation in all workshops is mandatory to be an Ascent Fellow and to access all of the benefits of the program.

  • Orientation: Ascent Fellows and their families will learn more about MAP and get answers to their questions about participation in the program. As Ascent Fellows work with UMD staff to create their application timeline, current Terps will answer questions about the college application process and help them get excited about going to college. Families are expected to sign in for all events and participate in all workshops.
  • Essay Writing & Financial Aid Workshop: Ascent Fellows will learn about writing college application essays. Meanwhile, staff from the Office of Student Financial Aid and Office of Undergraduate Admissions will assist families in navigating the financial aid process.
  • Application Workshop & Essay Review: Ascent Fellows will learn more about the application process for admission to UMD and receive a fee waiver. Through one-on-one counseling sessions, students will receive feedback about their college essays, academic profile and resume, and get advice about college selection. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions staff will provide information to assist families in navigating how admission decisions are made and share helpful hints.
